Right to Life NSW, Right to Life Australia and the University of Notre Dame invite you to hear first-hand the case for resisting the legalisation of assisted suicide in New South Wales.
A bill permitting assisted suicide is set to be introduced to the NSW Parliament later this year. It has been drafted by a working group of 5 MPs – Greens MLC Mehreen Faruqi, Labor MLC Lynda Voltz, Nationals MLC Trevor Khan, Liberal MP Lee Evans and Independent MP Alex Greenwich.
Assisted suicide is currently illegal across Australia in all six states and both territories. Tasmania has voted to reject euthanasia three times in the last 10 years, most recently on 24 May 2017. A bill was also voted down in the South Australian parliament in November 2016, while the Victorian government is intending to introduce their own bill in the state parliament later in 2017.
But what would the likely effects of legalising assisted suicide be?
As a Professor of Family Medicine and Medical Physician for over 35 years, Professor William Toffler M.D. from Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) Portland, Oregon has seen the dire impact of assisted-suicide laws on patients and his profession:
“Since the voters of Oregon narrowly legalized physician-assisted suicide 20 years ago, there has been a profound shift in attitude toward medical care – new fear and secrecy, and a fixation on death.”
Professor Toffler M.D.’s papers and interviews have received national and international recognition. He is Director of the largest course in the OHSU’s medical school – Principles of Clinical Medicine. He works actively to advocate against euthanasia and is National Director of Physicians for Compassionate Care Education Foundation.
If you, like us, are concerned about the potential implications of legalising assisted suicide, then this event is one not to be missed!
